Army marches on to new home

A NEW era is dawning for the Salvation Army in Eston after nearly 120 years at its old base.
Since 1890, home has been a hall in Bolckow Street.

But now, a move to a former Catholic church building in Bankfields Road will provide facilities more fit for the 21st Century.

The St Gregory the Great Church stood empty for two years, but has been given a £30,000 refit.

And on Sunday, it will host its first Salvation Army service.

Captains Gary and Lorraine Chaundy, leaders of Eston Salvation Army, have said their fond farewells to Bolckow Street and are looking forward to life in Bankfields Road.

Gary said: “The Salvation Army has been in Eston since 1890 and has built a strong reputation as a caring and relevant Christian church and charitable organisation.

“But we had a vision of a worship and community hall that went beyond what the old hall could offer us as local needs have now changed.

“The fantastic renovations at the former Catholic Church in Bankfields Road give us a new building that is bright, airy and fit for purpose.

“We have a large worship area with beautiful glass windows behind the lectern, new carpet, new office, toilets and community space.”

Capt Chaundy said he is looking forward to expanding the corps’ community programme, with a new Parent and Toddler Group starting in January. It will take place every Wednesday, 9.30am-11.30am.

“This is almost a new start for us here,” he added.

“The new office space means we can be on site at least five days a week and so be more accessible to people who need our help with pastoral support or practical needs, such as emergency clothing and food parcels.”

The new Eston HQ will officially be opened on Saturday, January 10 at 2pm, in the presence of Divisional Leaders Majors Melvin and Suzanne Fincham and local dignitaries.

But all are welcome to Sunday’s service, which starts at 10.30am.
